500 SERIES EFFECTS THAT I RECOMMEND

The 500 series have become very popular and there are some very good hardware effects to be had in that series. Here are my favorites from some of the most important catalogers (Compressor/limiter, EQ, Reverb, Preamps and others.


Here are my Recommendations. Full disclosure: I am NOT paid or endorsed by any one of these.


                            500 SERIES COMPRESSORS / LIMITERS

1.) API 529 Compressor

It takes up 2 slots and its primary use it to act as a bus compressor. Its my favorite compressor because i can control all the settings, including the Ratio, Threshold, Attack, Release, Knee and Make up Gain that can be set to manual or auto. 


2.) API 527 Compressor / Limiter

 This API unit is a single slot and just like the one above, it has settings for everything. Its almost the same unit as above, except it take sup a single slot. I love the sound of these.



500 SERIES EQ's 

1.) Solid State Logic 611EQ Parametric Equalization

What can i say about this? Its an awesome para EQ made by SSL. It has 2 classic sounds.

  • The Brown knob can give you the sound of the early 80's SSL consoles. Its more tasty and pleasant
  • The Black knob can give you more of a mid 80's sound with a more aggressive sound because of how it reacts to the low end. It makes it more tight and punchy.


2.) BAE B15 500 Series EQ

This is a true British 3 band EQ. This is is derived from the 80 series Neve consoles, but unlike the Neve 1073, you have 5 selectable frequencies per band



500 SERIES DELAY

EVENTIDE DDL-500

Its a digital delay with a 24bit / 192kHz resolution and do not be fooled by it being a digital delay. It has the sound of the 70'S analog delays.


500 SERIES REVERB

RADIAL TANK DRIVER

If you are looking for a good spring reverb to add to your rack this is it. Spring reverbs get overlooked. It has a wet and dry control and you can EQ the high and low end with its built in equalization controls.


500 SERIES PRE-AMPS
1.) CHANDLER LIMITED TG2-500 MIC PRE-AMP
Its modeled after thew EMI found in Abbey Road and other great studios form the 60's and 70's. Its built after the original EMI TG12428 that was used on 'Dark side Of The Moon' by Pink Floyd and was used to help create the sound of the BEATLES.

2.) TK AUDIO SP501 500 SERIES CLASS A PREAMP
It has a Hi-Z instrument input for guitars and bass's as well as phantom power and will give you the sound of the large format mixing board preamps

3.) MAAG AUDIO PREQ4 MIC PREAMP
 This preamp is great for recording vocals, guitars (acoustic and electric). It has an 'air ' setting that can bring more life out of your track.
